Ohutusseadmetest, literally tests of safety equipment, is the systematic evaluation of safety devices and personal protective equipment to verify that they meet defined safety and performance requirements. The scope includes a wide range of equipment, such as helmets, gloves, eye and face protection, hearing protectors, respiratory devices, safety footwear, harnesses, and other protective gear, as well as safety devices used in machinery and construction. Testing assesses material quality, mechanical strength, durability, ergonomics, fit, chemical resistance, flammability, electrical safety, and overall reliability under expected operating conditions. The goal is to identify failures, quantify performance, and support risk management decisions.

The testing process typically follows a defined plan: specification review, selection of applicable standards, laboratory and/or field tests, and interpretation of results. If a product meets the required criteria, a conformity assessment is completed, documentation is produced, and market access is granted through applicable markings or labeling, such as CE marking within the EU. In Estonia, testing is performed by accredited laboratories and conformity assessment bodies that operate under EU and national regulatory frameworks, contributing to market surveillance and consumer protection.

Standards and regulation play a central role. The EU PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 governs the supply of protective equipment, while corresponding EN standards provide the specific performance criteria.
