A core element is the implementation of practical control measures to eliminate or reduce risk, such as engineering controls, administrative controls, and PPE. Documentation and accessibility are essential for correct use and compliance.

Different sectors rely on specialized safety protocols. Electrical and machine safety protocols cover lockout-tagout and guarding; chemical safety protocols address labeling, storage, and exposure limits; fire safety protocols cover evacuation routes and alarm procedures; laboratory safety plans address chemical hygiene and biosafety. In information technology, cyber security protocols govern access control, incident response, and data backup.

Developing and maintaining safety protocols involve hazard identification, risk evaluation, stakeholder consultation, and alignment with national and international regulations. Protocols should be clear, tested through drills, and reviewed regularly to reflect new risks, equipment, or processes. Training ensures that staff understand and follow the procedures.
