Ohtralt

Ohtralt is a highland region in the northern part of the continent of Eldoria in the fictional world of Ardentia. It sits on a rugged plateau bounded by the River Orin to the west and the Mistfang Mountains to the north. The area features granite quarries, forested ridges, and a network of streams. Its population includes quarry workers, farmers, artisans, and merchants, organized into active guilds.

The name Ohtralt likely derives from Old Ohtran terms meaning “high stone.” The local language Ohtraltan belongs to the Eldorean language family and includes loanwords from neighboring dialects. Most residents are bilingual in Ohtraltan and the common trade language Eldari.

Ohtralt formed as a loose federation of three hill communities in the 9th century and consolidated into a regional government by the 12th century. It is governed by a rotating council drawn from towns and guilds; a written constitution protects guild autonomy and property rights. The region has experienced periodic skirmishes and border disputes with neighbors but has maintained relative stability in recent centuries.

The economy centers on quarrying (granite, slate, marble), metalwork, and stonecraft, with trade routes along the River Orin linking Ohtralt to southern markets. Cultural life emphasizes craftsmanship, seasonal guild fairs, and the Festival of Lanterns, which marks the harvest and memory of stone workers. Notable landmarks include the Ohtralt Wall, a cliff line valued for both scenery and strategic position.
