Ohjelmistoinstanssi, or software instance in English, refers to a running copy of a software application. When a program is installed on a computer, it exists as a set of files. However, it only becomes an "instance" when it is executed and loaded into the computer's memory, actively performing its intended functions.

A single software application can have multiple instances running simultaneously. For example, a user might open the same web browser program multiple times to view different websites in separate windows. Each of these windows represents a distinct instance of the browser software. Similarly, in server environments, multiple instances of a web server program might run to handle incoming requests from different users.

The concept of an instance is important for understanding how software operates and manages resources. Each instance consumes system resources such as CPU time and memory. Managing these instances efficiently is crucial for optimal system performance. In some cases, developers design software to ensure that only one instance can run at a time to prevent conflicts or data corruption, while others are designed to be multi-instance capable. The lifecycle of an instance begins with its launch and ends with its termination, either by user action or system process.
