Odlingstyper refers to the various methods and systems used for cultivating plants, encompassing everything from small-scale home gardening to large-scale industrial agriculture. These types are often distinguished by their environment, scale, intensity, and purpose.

One common distinction is between traditional open-field agriculture, where crops are grown directly in the soil outdoors, and controlled environment agriculture (CEA). CEA encompasses methods like greenhouse cultivation, where temperature, light, and humidity are regulated to optimize plant growth, and indoor farming, which often utilizes vertical systems and artificial lighting.

Hydroponics, aquaponics, and aeroponics are specific techniques within CEA that forgo soil entirely. Hydroponics involves growing plants in nutrient-rich water solutions. Aquaponics combines aquaculture (raising fish) with hydroponics, using fish waste as a nutrient source for plants. Aeroponics suspends plant roots in the air and mists them with nutrient-rich water.

Other odlingstyper include market gardening, which focuses on producing vegetables and fruits for local sale, and subsistence farming, where crops are grown primarily for the farmer's own consumption. The choice of odlingstyp depends on factors such as climate, available resources, market demand, and technological advancement.
