Odeonsplatz

Odeonsplatz is a large historic square in Munich, Germany, located at the southern end of Ludwigstraße. It is named after the Odeon, a large concert hall that was built between 1824 and 1826. The square was designed by Leo von Klenze and is known for its neoclassical architecture.

Key features of Odeonsplatz include the Feldherrnhalle, a loggia commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria and modeled after the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. The Feldherrnhalle was built between 1841 and 1844. In front of it stands the statue of the Bavarian general Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly. To the east of the square is the Theatinerkirche, a magnificent Baroque church completed in 1688. The Hofgarten, a beautiful Renaissance garden, lies to the north of the Odeon.

Odeonsplatz has been the site of many significant historical events. During the Nazi era, it served as a focal point for rallies and parades, notably the Beer Hall Putsch in 1923. Today, it is a popular public space, a transportation hub with U-Bahn and bus connections, and a gathering place for both locals and tourists. The square is often used for public events, concerts, and demonstrations, and its architectural grandeur makes it a significant landmark in Munich.
