Octaneboosting refers to the practice of increasing the octane rating of gasoline used in internal combustion engines by adding booster products or employing fuel-management techniques. The primary purpose is to raise resistance to premature ignition, or knocking, under high compression or aggressive timing. This can enable higher compression ratios, improved ignition timing, or support for forced induction without knock.

Most octane boosters are commercial additives designed to be mixed with the fuel supply. Their active ingredients vary by product but are intended to alter combustion characteristics to resist knocking. Some boosters rely on oxygenates or hydrocarbon-rich compounds, while others use solvent-like blends. The goal is to achieve a higher effective octane rating when the fuel-air mixture is compressed, heated, or stressed during operation.

The effectiveness of octaneboosting depends on the engine, fuel, and driving conditions. Modern vehicles with knock sensors may experience modest gains, while older or high-performance engines with sensitive timing or high compression can benefit more. However, boosters cannot overcome fundamental engine design limitations, and benefits may be limited if the engine is not tuned to take advantage of higher octane.
