Ocijenimo

Ocijenimo is a word used in the South Slavic languages, notably Croatian, Bosnian, and Serbian. It is the first-person plural present tense of the verb ocijeniti, meaning to evaluate, assess, or rate. The form can also function as a hortative or jussive imperative: Ocijenimo situaciju, meaning Let us assess the situation. In everyday speech, it is commonly used to propose collective action or to introduce a discussion of data, results, or conditions.

Morphology and usage: the standard present tense paradigm begins with mi ocijenimo; ti ocijeniš; on ocijeni; mi ocijenimo; vi ocijenite; oni ocijene. The form ocijenimo thus appears both as a simple present and as a persuasive “let us …” construction, depending on context.

Etymology: ocijeniti is derived from the noun ocjena, “an estimate or grade,” with a verb-forming suffix. The root ocjen- is shared with related terms in the same language family that express evaluation and value.

Usage notes: ocijenimo is found in journalism, academic writing, business reports, and political rhetoric when a group decision or assessment is being proposed. It contrasts with procijeniti, another common verb meaning to estimate or evaluate, often used for numerical assessment, and with cijijeniti (to value) in contexts that emphasize valuation rather than appraisal.
