Obturatorer

Obturatorer is the plural form of obturator in languages such as Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish. In medical and dental contexts, it can refer to both anatomical structures that occlude openings and to removable prostheses designed to close defects or passages in the body. The term originates from Latin obturare, to close up.

In anatomy, the obturator region centers on the obturator foramen, a large opening in the hip bone largely closed by the obturator membrane. The obturator canal within the foramen transmits the obturator nerve and vessels, which supply parts of the medial thigh. The obturator externus and obturator internus are muscles associated with the region, originating near the foramen and contributing to hip and pelvic stability. Clinical conditions related to these structures include obturator hernias and obturator neuropathies, which can affect thigh sensation or gait.

In prosthodontics and clinical practice, an obturator is a prosthesis that occludes an opening or defect. A palatal obturator, for example, closes the communication between the oral and nasal cavities after cleft palate repair or maxillectomy, improving speech and swallowing. Obturators can be designed for other sites as well, including nasal, vaginal, or urethral applications, to control leakage or seal a defect. They may be removable or implant-supported, depending on the defect and treatment goals. The concept emphasizes restoring function by reestablishing a barrier between compartments or cavities.
