Observabiliteettien, often translated as "observability," is a concept originating from control theory that has gained significant traction in software engineering and distributed systems. It refers to the ability to infer the internal state of a system based on external data that it produces. In essence, it's about understanding what's happening inside a complex system by examining the signals it emits, such as logs, metrics, and traces.

For software systems, observability is crucial for debugging, monitoring, and understanding performance. Unlike traditional monitoring, which often focuses on predefined metrics, observability aims to provide a deeper, more flexible understanding of system behavior. This allows engineers to ask arbitrary questions about the system's state without having to anticipate every potential problem beforehand. The three pillars of observability in software are typically logs, which record discrete events; metrics, which are numerical representations of data over time; and traces, which track the path of a request through a distributed system.

Effective observability enables faster incident response, improved system reliability, and better capacity planning. It helps in identifying the root cause of failures, understanding performance bottlenecks, and validating hypotheses about system behavior. The increasing complexity of modern distributed architectures, such as microservices and cloud-native applications, makes observability an indispensable practice for maintaining healthy and efficient systems.
