Objektivfunktioner, often translated as objective functions, are fundamental components in mathematical optimization problems. An objective function is a mathematical expression that quantifies what needs to be maximized or minimized. In essence, it represents the goal or target of the optimization process. For instance, in a business context, an objective function might represent profit, which a company would want to maximize, or cost, which it would aim to minimize.

The form of an objective function can vary greatly depending on the specific problem. It can be a linear function, a quadratic function, or a more complex non-linear expression involving various variables. These variables represent the decision parameters that can be adjusted to achieve the desired outcome. The value of the objective function is dependent on the values of these decision variables.

Optimization algorithms are designed to systematically search for the values of the decision variables that yield the optimal (maximum or minimum) value of the objective function, subject to a set of constraints. These constraints define the feasible region or the set of allowable solutions. Without an objective function, there would be no clear criterion to determine which solution is "better" than another in an optimization problem.
