Born in Sibiu, Transylvania (then part of Austria-Hungary), he moved to Germany where his theoretical and practical work contributed to the development of modern spaceflight. He is regarded as one of the founding fathers of astronautics, alongside Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and Robert Goddard.
