Oberpfälzisch

Oberpfälzisch is a group of Bavarian German dialects spoken in the Upper Palatinate (Oberpfalz) region of eastern Bavaria, Germany, near the Czech border. It belongs to the Bavarian language group and forms part of the broader Bavarian dialect continuum; its precise classification can vary among linguists, reflecting both shared Bavarian features and local variation.

Geographically, Oberpfälzisch is used across the Upper Palatinate, with noticeable differences between northern and southern areas and among rural communities and towns such as Regensburg and Amberg. The dialects show internal diversity and are influenced by nearby speech varieties, including East Franconian and Bohemian-influenced speech from the border area.

Linguistically, Oberpfälzisch shares many characteristics with other Bavarian dialects, including distinctive vocabulary and phonetic patterns. Regional pronunciations, vowel qualities, and consonant realizations can differ from Standard German and from neighboring Bavarian varieties, producing a recognizable local speech.
