Oberflächengewebe, often translated as surface tension, is a characteristic property of liquids. It arises from the cohesive forces between liquid molecules. Within the bulk of the liquid, each molecule is pulled equally in all directions by neighboring molecules. However, at the surface, molecules are attracted by fewer molecules in the liquid phase and more by the molecules in the gas phase above. This imbalance of forces leads to a net inward pull on the surface molecules, causing them to pack more closely together and behave as if the surface were covered by a stretched elastic membrane.
