Obenzyl
Obenzyl is a term used in organic chemistry to denote a benzyl substituent attached to an oxygen atom, forming an O-benzyl ether when a hydroxyl group is protected. The abbreviation OBn (or BnO-) is common in chemical literature to indicate this protecting group.
In synthetic chemistry, the O-benzyl (OBn) group is a widely used protecting group for alcohols and phenols.
Removal of the OBn protecting group is usually achieved by hydrogenolysis, employing hydrogen gas over a palladium
OBn chemistry extends beyond simple alcohol protection; it is frequently employed in carbohydrate and natural product
