OBDIIstandardi refers to the On-Board Diagnostics, Second Generation standard. This is a set of standardized protocols that allows for a universal system for vehicle self-diagnosis and reporting. The primary purpose of OBDII is to provide a standardized interface for vehicle diagnostic information, making it easier for technicians and consumers to access data related to engine performance and emissions.

The OBDII standard was mandated by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) in 1996 for all vehicles sold in California. Its adoption was later expanded to all vehicles sold in the United States by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Key aspects of the OBDII standard include a standardized diagnostic connector, a common set of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), and a defined set of communication protocols.

The diagnostic connector, typically located under the dashboard, is a 16-pin J1962 connector. When a problem is detected by the vehicle's computer, a DTC is stored, and a warning light, often the "Check Engine" or "Malfunction Indicator Lamp" (MIL), illuminates on the dashboard. Technicians can then connect a scan tool to the OBDII port to retrieve these DTCs, which indicate the specific area of concern.

OBDII has significantly improved vehicle maintenance and emissions control by providing a consistent and accessible method for diagnosing issues. It plays a crucial role in ensuring vehicles meet emissions standards and helps in identifying and repairing problems efficiently.
