Næringsmønstre, a Norwegian term for “nutrition patterns,” refers to the habitual combinations of foods and nutrients that people consume over time. Unlike isolated dietary components, nutrition patterns capture the complex interactions among foods, preparation methods, and eating occasions, offering a more holistic view of diet quality. Researchers identify these patterns through statistical techniques such as factor analysis, cluster analysis, or principal component analysis applied to dietary intake data collected by food frequency questionnaires, 24‑hour recalls, or food diaries. The resulting patterns are often labeled descriptively—for example, “Western,” “Prudent,” or “Mediterranean”—based on dominant food groups or nutrient profiles.

The study of næringsmønstre has become central to nutritional epidemiology, as pattern‑level analyses can explain health outcomes more effectively than single‑food or nutrient studies. Evidence shows that patterns rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fish, and unsaturated fats are associated with lower risks of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, and premature mortality. Conversely, patterns dominated by processed meats, refined grains, sugary beverages, and high-fat dairy are linked to higher disease risk.

In Norway, national dietary surveys have identified a shift from traditional “prudent” patterns toward a more “Western” pattern over recent decades, raising public health concerns. Public health policies often target these patterns through dietary guidelines, nutrition labeling, and food subsidies.
