Nätverksidentifieraren

Nätverksidentifieraren, often translated as network identifier, is a term used in computer networking to refer to a piece of information that uniquely identifies a network or a specific node within a network. The exact nature of a nätverksidentifier can vary depending on the network protocol and context.

In the context of IP networking, the most common nätverksidentifier is the IP address. An IPv4 address, for instance, is a 32-bit number that, along with a subnet mask, defines a specific network. Devices within the same network share a common network portion of their IP addresses, distinguishing them from devices on different networks. Similarly, IPv6 addresses are 128-bit numbers that serve the same purpose but offer a vastly larger address space.

Beyond IP addresses, other forms of nätverksidentifier exist. MAC addresses (Media Access Control addresses) are hardware-based identifiers assigned to network interface controllers, uniquely identifying each device at the data link layer. In wireless networks, the SSID (Service Set Identifier) acts as a nätverksidentifier for Wi-Fi networks, allowing devices to find and connect to specific wireless access points. The concept of a nätverksidentifier is fundamental to the operation of all networks, enabling devices to communicate and route data effectively.
