Nätverksdröjningar, often referred to as network latency or simply delay, describes the time it takes for data to travel from its source to its destination across a computer network. This delay is an inherent characteristic of all networks and can be influenced by various factors.

The primary components contributing to network delay include transmission delay, propagation delay, processing delay, and queuing delay. Transmission delay is the time required to push all the bits of a data packet onto the network link. Propagation delay is the time it takes for a signal to travel the physical distance of the link, dependent on the speed of light or electrical signals. Processing delay occurs as network devices like routers examine packet headers and decide where to send them. Queuing delay arises when packets must wait in line at routers or switches due to network congestion.

High network latency can negatively impact the performance of real-time applications such as online gaming, video conferencing, and voice-over-IP (VoIP) calls, leading to lag, dropped connections, or poor audio and video quality. Understanding and minimizing network delay is crucial for designing efficient and responsive network infrastructures. Techniques to mitigate latency include optimizing routing paths, increasing bandwidth, and employing quality of service (QoS) mechanisms to prioritize time-sensitive traffic.
