Näsflöde

Näsflöde, also known as rhinorrhea, is a condition characterized by a thin, watery nasal discharge. It is a common symptom of various illnesses and conditions, often indicating an excess of mucus production in the nasal passages. The discharge is typically clear and can be caused by a range of factors, including infections, allergies, and irritants.

One of the most common causes of näsflöde is the common cold, which is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. During a cold, the body produces excess mucus to help flush out the virus, leading to a runny nose. Allergies, such as hay fever, can also trigger näsflöde. When an allergen is inhaled, the immune system overreacts, causing inflammation and increased mucus production in the nasal passages.

Other causes of näsflöde include sinus infections, non-allergic rhinitis, and exposure to irritants like smoke, strong odors, or changes in temperature and humidity. In some cases, näsflöde can be a side effect of certain medications, such as those used to treat high blood pressure.

Treatment for näsflöde depends on the underlying cause. For viral infections like the common cold, rest and hydration are usually recommended, as antibiotics are not effective against viruses. Antihistamines and decongestants may be used to manage allergy-related näsflöde.
