The structure of nerve fibers varies depending on their type and function. Sensory fibers are often myelinated, which helps to insulate the axon and increase the speed of impulse transmission. Motor and autonomic fibers can also be myelinated, but this is not always the case. The myelin sheath is produced by Schwann cells in peripheral nerves and oligodendrocytes in the CNS.
