Närvirakkude

Närvirakkude, commonly known as nerve cells or neurons, are the fundamental units of the nervous system. They are specialized cells responsible for transmitting information throughout the body in the form of electrical and chemical signals. These signals allow for rapid communication between different parts of the organism, enabling functions such as sensory perception, motor control, thought, and emotion.

A typical neuron consists of a cell body (soma), dendrites, and an axon. The cell body contains the nucleus and other essential organelles. Dendrites are branched extensions that receive signals from other neurons. The axon is a long projection that transmits signals away from the cell body to other neurons, muscles, or glands. The junction between two neurons is called a synapse, where chemical messengers known as neurotransmitters are released to carry the signal across the gap.

Neurons are incredibly diverse in their structure and function, adapted to their specific roles within the nervous system. For example, sensory neurons detect stimuli from the environment, motor neurons control muscle contractions, and interneurons connect other neurons. The intricate network of neurons forms the basis of all nervous system activity, from simple reflexes to complex cognitive processes. Damage to or dysfunction of närvirakkude can lead to a wide range of neurological disorders.
