Nátriumoxibat

Nátriumoxibat is a medication used to treat certain types of muscle weakness, including muscle atrophy and myasthenia gravis. June 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved nátriumoxibat under the trade name Gemtek. Gemtek is indicated for the treatment of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and excessive nighttime sleepiness (ENSS) in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness.

Clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of nátriumoxibat in treating EDS and ENSS in patients with DMD. nátriumoxibat was shown to significantly improve functioning and reduce muscle wasting in patients with DMD.

Common side effects reported in clinical trials include tremors, insomnia, and increased anxiety. More serious side effects include cardiovascular palpitations and changes in heart rate.

Nátriumoxibat is administered orally, typically twice daily, depending on individual tolerance and clinical response. The recommended starting dose is 225 mg, and it can be adjusted in 150-mg increments as needed.
