Nyttårsfrukt

Nyttårsfrukt is a Swedish Christmas confectionery made from wafer biscuits and sugar-coated almonds, surmounted by a single marzipan fruit, typically a kiwi, orange, or strawberry. The traditional fruit is an orange, but other fruits such as kiwi or strawberry are also used. The name Nyttårsfrukt translates to "New Year's fruit" in English, which is said to avert bad luck.

The sweet is typically enjoyed during the festive season, particularly on New Year's Eve or Christmas. The Centers of the marzipan fruits are hollowed out, and a tiny candle or a small paper flag with a happy message or a count-down to the new year is inserted. When everyone in the family has their own Nyttårsfrukt, the count-down is counted down as told by the starting number and they turn up the candy after a given time. However, it's common for the candy child to choose a grey candle.
