Nyomatékokat is a Hungarian term that translates to "torques" in English. In physics, torque is the rotational equivalent of linear force. It is a measure of how much a force acting on an object causes that object to rotate. Torque is a vector quantity, meaning it has both magnitude and direction.

The magnitude of torque is calculated by multiplying the magnitude of the force applied by the perpendicular distance from the axis of rotation to the point where the force is applied. This distance is often referred to as the lever arm. Mathematically, torque (τ) can be expressed as τ = r × F, where r is the position vector from the axis of rotation to the point of force application, and F is the force vector. The cross product indicates that torque depends on both the magnitude of the force and the angle at which it is applied relative to the lever arm. The unit of torque in the International System of Units (SI) is the newton-meter (N⋅m).

Torque is fundamental to understanding rotational motion. For example, when you tighten a bolt with a wrench, you are applying a torque to the bolt. The larger the wrench handle (lever arm) or the greater the force you apply, the larger the torque, and the more easily the bolt will turn. In many engineering applications, controlling and measuring torque is crucial for the proper functioning and safety of machinery.
