Nykytraktorits

Nykytraktorits is a small, semi-aquatic mammal native to the wetlands of the northern Tundra region. It resembles a cross between a muskrat and a river otter, with a dense, water‑repellent coat and webbed hind feet. The species is typically 30 to 35 centimetres long from head to tail, and it weighs between 2.5 and 3.5 kilograms. Nykytraktorits is known for its distinctive dorsal ridge, a greyish–blue crest that runs along its spine and is thought to aid in thermoregulation during cold winter months.

This animal is primarily herbivorous, feeding on reeds, sedges and aquatic grasses. In addition, it occasionally consumes small crustaceans and amphibians, especially when plant food is scarce. Nykytraktorits builds dome‑shaped burrows in the banks of slow‑moving streams, where it and its young are protected from predators such as Arctic foxes and wolverines. During the breeding season, which occurs from late April to early June, the female gives birth to a litter of three to five pups after a gestation period of about 95 days.

Population estimates suggest there are roughly 30,000 individuals across known habitats, though ongoing climate change and wetland drainage pose threats to the species. Conservation efforts are focusing on protecting wetland corridors and monitoring water quality. While Nykytraktorits is currently listed as a species of least concern by international conservation bodies, continued habitat preservation is considered essential for its long‑term viability.
