Nykykieliset

Nykykieliset is a term used in Finnish sociolinguistics to refer to speakers of contemporary Finnish, i.e., the form of the language that is in use today in everyday speech and most current writing. The concept is not a fixed demographic category but a way to discuss language as it exists in the present, including standard Finnish as well as everyday vernacular varieties. Nykykieli encompasses both spoken and written use and reflects ongoing changes in vocabulary, syntax, and style.

The idea of nykykieli emerges from the ongoing evolution of Finnish since its standardization in the 19th and 20th centuries.
