Nutzbreite

Nutzbreite is a term used in German-speaking industry to denote the usable width of a material, component, or space. It refers to the portion that can actually be used for a task, after subtracting nonusable margins, edges, or tolerances. The exact meaning is context-dependent and is defined in specifications or process descriptions.

In printing and graphic design, die-cutting, and sheet processing, Nutzbreite indicates the printable or cutting width available on a sheet or roll after trimming and bleed allowances. It determines layout margins, text column widths, and the maximum width of images.

In textiles, it is the fabric width available for cutting garments or products, usually the nominal fabric width minus selvage or other nonusable edges. For example, a fabric with a nominal width of 150 cm might have a Nutzbreite around 145–148 cm depending on the selvedges.

In packaging and sheet materials, Nutzbreite describes the width that can be used for inner dimensions, content packaging, or installation, taking into account packaging tolerances and sealing margins.

In production and logistics, Nutzbreite is used to calculate yield and material usage, comparing nominal material width with the actual usable width. It is important for cost estimation, machine setup, and quality control.
