Nussölen

Nussölen is a small village in the temperate lowlands of Northern Europe. The name combines elements meaning “nut” and “oil” in the local language, reflecting its traditional association with hazelnut oil production.

It sits along the River Mirth, at about 120–180 meters above sea level, surrounded by mixed forests and hazelnut groves. The climate is oceanic, with mild winters and cool summers; rainfall is distributed evenly.

The first written records date to the early 16th century. For centuries the village relied on nut orchards and small oil mills; in the 19th century, mechanization increased production. Today the economy centers on nut oil production, forestry, and small-scale tourism.

Local culture centers on the hazelnut harvest festival, culinary traditions using hazelnut oil, and a regional dialect. Notable sites include the Nussölen Mill, the Nut Oil Museum, and a restored stone bridge over the River Mirth.
