Numbrile

Numbrile is a hypothetical concept used in speculative mathematics to formalize a measure of numeral-density across numeral systems. The term blends number with the suffix -ile to indicate a measurable property rather than a fixed constant. In this article, the concept is treated as a heuristic device rather than a formal theorem.

For a base-b positional numeral system, every natural number n has a representation with D_b(n) digits and Z_b(n) nonzero digits. The numbrile of base b, denoted N_b, is defined, when a limit exists, as the long-run ratio Z_b(n)/D_b(n) as n grows large. If the limit does not exist, liminf and limsup versions provide lower and upper numbrile bounds. In typical modeling under a random-digit assumption, one expects Z_b(n)/D_b(n) to converge toward (b-1)/b, so N_b is often discussed as an approximate density of nonzero digits in that base.

History and usage: The idea originated in informal discussions about numeral efficiency and encoding overhead. It has not been adopted as a formal standard in number theory and is mainly used as a teaching aid or thought exercise to compare how “dense” different bases are with respect to written numbers.

Properties and limitations: Numbrile is base-dependent and sensitive to the chosen set of numbers. It is not a universal constant and may vary under different modeling assumptions. As a heuristic, it highlights that digit distribution influences compression-like considerations in numeral systems.
