Nsyndecan

N-syndecan, also known as syndecan-3, is a member of the syndecan family of heparan sulfate proteoglycans. It is a transmembrane proteoglycan whose core protein bears covalently attached heparan sulfate glycosaminoglycan chains. In humans, N-syndecan is encoded by the SDC3 gene and is primarily expressed in the nervous system.

Expression of N-syndecan is notable in developing and adult neural tissue. It is found in subsets of neurons in the brain and spinal cord and is associated with axonal membranes, growth cones, and synaptic regions. Its distribution can vary with development and brain region, reflecting roles in neural maturation and plasticity.

Functionally, N-syndecan serves as a co-receptor that presents heparan sulfate-bound ligands to their receptors, thereby modulating multiple signaling pathways.
