Non-Resident Indian (NRI) is a term used to describe an Indian citizen who resides outside India for employment, business, or long-term stay. The designation is used in government policy, banking, and financial services to identify individuals who are not ordinarily resident in India.

NRIs are Indian citizens living abroad. Foreign nationals of Indian origin may be eligible for Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI), a separate, long-term residency status that grants certain rights in India; the earlier PIO category was merged with OCI in 2015.

For banking and finance, NRIs commonly hold Non-Resident External (NRE) and Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) accounts, as well as FCNR deposits, to manage funds abroad and earn in Indian rupees. Indian-sourced income is taxable for NRIs, while foreign-sourced income is generally not taxable in India, subject to the rules on tax residency.

NRIs may own immovable property in India, typically excluding agricultural land, farmhouses, and certain plantation properties. Purchases and remittances are governed by RBI and FEMA rules, with funding often routed through NRE or FCNR accounts and subject to repatriation limits.

NRI remittances and investments contribute to India's economy and finance several sectors. The Indian diaspora maintains cultural, educational, and philanthropic links through associations, trusts, and community initiatives, helping to support talent exchange and development.
