Novgorodians refers to the inhabitants of Novgorod, a historic city in northwestern Russia. The term most commonly evokes the people of Veliky Novgorod, the ancient capital of the Novgorod Republic, a powerful medieval state that existed from the 11th to the 15th centuries. These Novgorodians were known for their distinct political and economic characteristics.

Politically, the Novgorod Republic was unique in medieval Rus' for its republican form of government. Power was vested in a popular assembly called the Veche, which elected officials, including the Posadnik (mayor) and the Tysyatsky (military commander). This system fostered a strong sense of civic participation and autonomy among the Novgorodians, contrasting with the more autocratic principalities elsewhere in Rus'.

Economically, Novgorodians thrived as a major trading hub. Situated on the Volkhov River, it served as a crucial link on the trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks, connecting Scandinavia and the Baltic with the Byzantine Empire and the East. Novgorodians were skilled merchants, actively involved in the fur, wax, and timber trades, and maintained extensive commercial ties with Western European cities, particularly through the Hanseatic League. Their wealth and independent spirit were defining features of their identity. The term can also refer to modern-day residents of the city of Veliky Novgorod.
