Notkunarmálma

Notkunarmálma is an Icelandic linguistic term used to describe a category of linguistic elements that primarily serve grammatical or discursive functions rather than carrying independent lexical content. The word is composed of notkun, meaning use or usage, and málma, a term used for linguistic items. In some theories of Icelandic grammar, notkunarmálma encompasses function words such as conjunctions, prepositions, pronouns, determiners, particles, and certain discourse markers. The exact membership of the group varies among scholars, but it is consistently contrasted with content words that denote concrete concepts.

These elements enable sentence structure, reference, negation, tense and aspect marking, and discourse management. Conjunctions link clauses (og, eða, en); prepositions mark spatial or temporal relations (í, á, við); pronouns substitute for nouns (hann, hún, það); determiners specify reference (þessi, sá); particles and discourse markers (nú, samt, því) signal stance, cohesion, or pragmatic facet of utterance.
