Notchifiltreid, also known as a notch filter, is an electronic filter that passes most frequencies but attenuates (reduces the amplitude of) frequencies within a narrow band. The name "notch" refers to the narrow, deep dip in the frequency response. This type of filter is often used to remove a specific unwanted frequency from a signal.

The primary function of a notch filter is to reject a single frequency while allowing all other frequencies to pass through with minimal attenuation. This is in contrast to a band-stop filter, which attenuates a wider range of frequencies. The sharpness of the notch, or the bandwidth of frequencies rejected, is a key characteristic of a notch filter. A narrower notch filter is more selective in removing only the target frequency, while a wider notch filter would affect adjacent frequencies more.

Notch filters find applications in various fields. In audio processing, they are used to eliminate specific hums or whistles caused by power line frequencies or feedback. In signal processing and analysis, they are useful for isolating components of a signal by removing unwanted spectral lines.
