NotausSchalter

NotAusSchalter, commonly referred to as an emergency stop switch, is a safety device fitted to machines and processes to allow immediate cessation of dangerous operations. In German-speaking contexts, the term NotAusSchalter or Not-Aus-Schalter is used. It is designed to provide a clearly recognizable means to quickly stop equipment, typically by interrupting the control circuit and triggering a safe state. The device usually consists of a red push-button with a yellow background; many versions use a mushroom-shaped head. It is usually latched in the actuated position and requires a deliberate reset to resume operation.

In operation, pressing the NotAus stops all drive power or de-energizes essential control circuits, depending on the circuit design, and is intended to function even if other controls fail. It is not a substitute for normal stop controls but a last-resort safety measure. After activation, the device should be reset only by authorized personnel once the hazard is cleared.

Standards and compliance: emergency stop devices are covered by ISO 13850 (EN ISO 13850), IEC 60947-5-5, and related safety standards. The overall safety of the machine is governed by risk assessment and may require two-channel safety circuits, testing, and regular maintenance.

Installation and maintenance: NotAusSchalter must be easily reachable, unobstructed, and clearly labeled. It should be protected against unintended activation and tested periodically per manufacturer guidance and regulatory requirements. Maintenance includes inspection of mechanical wear, contacts, and wiring; devices should be replaced if wear affects performance.
