Norðfjórðungur

Norðfjórðungur, meaning "North Quarter" in Old Norse, is one of the traditional regions of Iceland, historically divided into four quarters (*fjórðungar*). This division was based on geographical and administrative distinctions rather than strict political boundaries. Norðfjórðungur encompasses the northernmost part of Iceland, stretching from the Arctic Circle in the north to the region around Akureyri in the south.

The region includes several notable areas such as the Vestfirðir (Westfjords), the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and parts of the North Icelandic Lowlands. Major settlements in Norðfjórðungur include Akureyri, the largest city in the region, as well as smaller towns like Sauðárkrókur, Húsavík, and Ísafjörður. The landscape is diverse, featuring dramatic fjords, volcanic mountains, geothermal areas, and vast plains, contributing to its rich natural beauty.

Historically, Norðfjórðungur was known for its harsh climate and challenging living conditions, which led to significant emigration during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The region played a role in Iceland’s early settlement, with Norse settlers arriving as early as the 9th century. Additionally, Norðfjórðungur is renowned for its natural attractions, such as the Mývatn geothermal area, the Dettifoss waterfall, and the stunning landscapes of the Westfjords.
