Nopeuslaki

Nopeuslaki is a Finnish term commonly used to refer to the speed-related provisions of Finland's road traffic legislation. There is no separate statute officially named Nopeuslaki; the rules governing speed limits and speeding offenses are primarily found in the Road Traffic Act (tieliikennelaki) and its implementing decrees. These rules set standard speed limits for different road categories, as well as rules for temporary restrictions and conditions that justify adjusting speed.

The framework is based on safety considerations; speed limits vary between urban, rural, and highway settings and can be altered for weather, visibility, road conditions, or construction work. Drivers must drive at a speed appropriate for the conditions, even if this means going below the posted limit. The law also covers exemptions for emergency and certain authorized vehicles and outlines responsibilities for vehicle owners and operators.

Enforcement is carried out by the police using patrols and speed monitoring devices, including fixed and mobile cameras. Penalties for speeding range from fines to more serious consequences such as license suspension or revocation, and may involve court proceedings in cases of severe or repeated offenses. The exact penalty depends on factors such as the amount by which the speed limit was exceeded, the road type, and the offender's history.
