Nonmaritime

Nonmaritime is an adjective used to describe things that are not related to the sea or other bodies of water, or to activities that do not involve seaborne navigation, transportation, or commerce. The word is formed from the prefix non- and maritime, which derives from Latin maritimus "of the sea" from mare "sea".

In geography and meteorology, nonmaritime contexts describe inland areas less influenced by maritime conditions. Maritime climates tend to moderate temperatures; inland climates often show greater seasonal variation and reduced oceanic influence. The exact usage varies by discipline and region.

In law and regulation, nonmaritime matters are generally governed by general civil or criminal law rather than maritime law (admiralty). This distinction is not universal; jurisdictions may have exceptions for activities near coasts or navigable waters. In business, nonmaritime industries include land-based sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and services.

In transportation, nonmaritime transport refers to land and air modes, contrasted with maritime transport by sea.
