Nonkarst

Nonkarst refers to landscapes, rock types, and hydrological systems in which karst processes are absent or negligible. Karst terrain is defined by the dissolution of soluble rocks, typically limestone or dolostone, leading to features such as caves, sinkholes, and underground drainage. In nonkarst settings, these dissolution features are minimal or absent, and landscapes are shaped by other processes such as mechanical erosion, tectonics, volcanism, glaciation, or sedimentary deposition.

In terms of geomorphology, nonkarst areas may comprise rugged mountainous regions, flat plains, deserts, or volcanic terrains where rock solubility is low or where weathering operates primarily through physical rather than chemical dissolution. Cave systems and extensive underground drainage are uncommon in nonkarst regions, though minor solution features can occur in some lime-rich rocks or in soils where limited dissolution takes place.

Hydrogeologically, groundwater flow in nonkarst terrains tends to be controlled by rock porosity, permeability, and fracture networks rather than rapid conduit flow through large conduits or caves. Aquifers in nonkarst settings are often sandstone, shale, granite, or other non-soluble rock types, with water movement restricted to fractures or porous layers and typically lacking the highly channelized flow characteristic of karst aquifers.

The term is used to contrast nonkarst with karst landscapes in geology, hydrology, and environmental science. Recognizing nonkarst conditions is important for groundwater exploration, land-use planning, and hazard assessment, as the presence or absence of karst features strongly influences water resources, construction, and geohazards.
