Nonadaptafixuations are a hypothetical concept in evolutionary biology that describes traits or behaviors that persist within a population despite lacking any adaptive advantage, and in some cases, may even be slightly disadvantageous. Unlike vestigial structures that are remnants of previously advantageous traits, nonadaptafixuations are considered to be neutral or even detrimental in their current form. The term suggests a "fixation" of these traits due to factors other than natural selection.

Several mechanisms could theoretically lead to nonadaptafixuations. Genetic drift, particularly in small populations, could cause neutral or slightly deleterious alleles to become fixed by chance. Another possibility is that the trait was once adaptive in a different environment or context, but the selective pressures have since changed, leaving the trait without its former benefit. Sexual selection could also play a role if the trait is linked to mate preference, even if it doesn't confer survival benefits.

Furthermore, nonadaptafixuations might arise from developmental constraints, where certain traits are locked into a particular form due to the complex interplay of developmental pathways, making it difficult for evolution to alter them even if they are no longer optimal. The concept is largely theoretical and difficult to definitively identify in natural populations, as it requires ruling out all possible selective advantages, past or present, and considering various non-selective evolutionary forces. The identification of such traits would provide valuable insights into the limitations and complexities of evolutionary processes beyond simple adaptation.
