Nominering

Nominering refers to the process of proposing a person or organization as a candidate for a position, award, or other form of recognition. The act precedes the actual selection and is often governed by rules set by the nominating body. The term derives from nominera, meaning to name or designate, and in Swedish the noun nominering is used for both the act and the list of nominees.

Contexts for nominations include political life, where parties nominate candidates for offices or electoral lists; organizational settings, where boards or committees nominate individuals for roles; and awards and prizes, where individuals or groups are proposed for recognition. The specific procedures vary, but common elements include a call for nominations, submission of candidate information, verification of eligibility, and evaluation by a nominating committee or jury. Some processes require the candidate's consent and disclosure of potential conflicts of interest. Depending on the system, nominations may be public or confidential, and shortlisting or endorsement can precede a final decision by a separate body, such as a legislative body, a board, or an awarding committee.

Nominering differs from election and appointment. A nomination is a proposal, whereas an election involves choosing among candidates by vote, and an appointment is a formal designation by a competent authority after review. Criticism of nomination processes can concern biases, lack of transparency, or influence from interest groups. Notable examples include nominations for political offices, corporate boards, and internationally recognized prizes such as the Nobel Prize, which rely on expert nominators.
