Historically, it has been used in anthropological literature to refer to groups who lead itinerant lifestyles, migrating between settlements in response to environmental, economic, or sociopolitical factors. In European ethnographic studies of the 19th and early 20th centuries, scholars such as Paul Rivet and Paul Radin employed the label when cataloguing the customs of various Sami, Romani, and Engadine groups.
