Nollapistejännitys refers to the residual stress that remains in a material after all external applied loads have been removed. It is a phenomenon present in various materials, including metals, ceramics, and polymers, and can significantly influence their mechanical properties and performance. These internal stresses arise from a variety of sources during material processing, manufacturing, or service.

Common sources of nollapistejännitys include manufacturing processes like welding, casting, forging, machining, and heat treatment. For instance, during welding, the rapid heating and cooling of the metal can lead to differential expansion and contraction, resulting in locked-in stresses. Similarly, in casting, the solidification process can create residual stresses as different parts of the material cool at different rates. Machining operations can also induce surface stresses due to plastic deformation.
