Noiseerrors

Noiseerrors is a term encountered in informal technical discourse to denote errors in measurements, observations, or signals that result from the presence of noise. It is not a formal term with a canonical definition in major scholarly literature, and it is rarely used in official specifications. In practical contexts, noiseerrors describe the discrepancy between the true quantity of interest and its observed value after noise has influenced the measurement process.

Noise can originate from electrical, thermal, shot, or environmental sources and may be white, colored, Gaussian, Poisson, or other distributions. Depending on the domain, noise can interact with the measurement system to produce bias, increased variance, or both, leading to observed values that deviate from the underlying truth. The concept is therefore closely related to, but not limited to, measurement error and error propagation analyses.

Domains where noiseerrors are discussed include digital communications, imaging, remote sensing, astronomy, and experimental physics. Examples include bit errors caused by noise in a communication channel, random pixel deviations in photographs, or biased parameter estimates in laboratory measurements due to noisy data.

Mitigation strategies focus on improving the signal-to-noise ratio and employing statistical methods. Approaches include averaging repeated measurements, filtering, calibration, sensor fusion, robust statistics, and Bayesian inference to account for and reduce the impact of noise on estimates.
