Niukaksi

Niukaksi is a term used in speculative fiction to denote a ceremonial object and its accompanying ritual within the imagined culture of the Xari people of the Virean Archipelago. The concept is a product of worldbuilding and appears in discussions of ritual material culture in fictional settings. The etymology is internal to the fiction; different authors attribute different roots to the word, but it is generally treated as a combined noun describing both artifact and practice.

In its typical depictions, a niukaksi is a circular or disk-shaped object carved from basalt or hardwood, about 15 to 25 centimeters in diameter, and bound with plant fiber cords. It may be decorated with ochre, beads, or runes, and is sometimes fitted with a suspended handle to enable carrying during processions.

Ritually, the niukaksi anchors the winter-solstice ceremony. A procession carries the disk from a shrine to a prepared circle near a river or coast, where chants are offered and offerings placed. At the climax, the disk is laid within a marked circle, lights or flames are kindled, and the participants engage in a reciprocal exchange of songs and blessings. The ceremony emphasizes cyclical time, renewal, and communal bonds.

Variations exist: some versions use wooden disks, others alter ceremonial locations or accompanying melodies. In scholarship and media, niukaksi is cited as an example of how imagined ritual objects can convey cultural depth. It is not a real-world artifact.
