Nitraattiryhmien

Nitraattiryhmien, a Finnish term, translates to "nitrate groups" in English. In chemistry, a nitrate group is a functional group with the chemical formula NO₃⁻. This polyatomic anion consists of a central nitrogen atom covalently bonded to three oxygen atoms. One oxygen atom has a double bond, while the other two have single bonds, resulting in a net negative charge on the entire group. The nitrate ion is planar and has resonance structures, meaning the negative charge is delocalized across all three oxygen atoms.

Nitrate groups are found in various inorganic and organic compounds. Inorganic nitrates are salts containing the nitrate ion, such as potassium nitrate (KNO₃) and sodium nitrate (NaNO₃).
