Nines

Nines is the plural form of the number nine. It can refer to multiple occurrences of the digit 9, quantities or labels that use the numeral nine, or to contexts in which nine functions as a unit of counting, rating, or designation.

In mathematics, 9 is a perfect square (3^2) and an odd composite number with divisors 1, 3, and 9. In the decimal system, 9 is the greatest single-digit. Numbers ending in 9 often arise in rounding and place-value reasoning, and in modular arithmetic 9 is congruent to -1 modulo 10.

In numeral systems, the symbol 9 appears in base-10 and any higher base that includes at least ten digits. In bases 9 and below, there is no single-digit 9; for example, base-9 uses digits 0 through 8. The Roman numeral for 9 is IX, and the binary representation of 9 is 1001.

9's complement is a method used in decimal arithmetic: the 9's complement of a digit is 9 minus that digit. It is used in subtraction algorithms and in some digital computation techniques. The 10's complement extends this idea to handle negative numbers in fixed-width representations.

Culture and language note that the number nine carries symbolic meanings in various traditions, and phrases such as “cloud nine” reflect positive or peak states associated with the digit. In sports and labeling contexts, “nines” can refer to groups or individuals identified by the number 9.
