Nilópolis

Nilópolis is a municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is part of the Baixada Fluminense region and the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area. The city covers about 11 square kilometers and has a population of around 165,000, making it one of the more densely populated municipalities in its region.

Nilópolis originated in the early 20th century as a suburban development in the Baixada Fluminense and achieved municipal status during the mid-20th century. The local economy centers on commerce, services, and light industry, with residential areas closely integrated with commercial zones. Because of its proximity to Rio de Janeiro, many residents commute to the capital for work.

Cultural life includes the traditional samba scene; the municipality is known for the samba school Acadêmicos de Nilópolis, which competes in Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival. Public life features basic urban infrastructure, schools, healthcare facilities, and public squares.

Transportation is primarily via road networks and buses, with regional connections to neighboring municipalities and the greater Rio de Janeiro area. Nilópolis maintains municipal government institutions and participates in regional planning within the state.
