Nikolaev
Nikolaev is a city located in southern Ukraine, situated on the banks of the Southern Bug River, not far from its estuary with the Black Sea. Historically, it has been a significant industrial and shipbuilding center. The city was founded in 1789 by Grigory Potemkin, a prominent statesman under Catherine the Great, and was named after Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. Its strategic location led to the development of a major naval base and shipyards, which played a crucial role in the Russian and later Soviet Black Sea fleets.
